For nearly 30 years, Phu My Power Center has been the "energy heart" of Southern Vietnam, a symbol of the maturity of Vietnam's electricity sector, contributing to energy security and social welfare, with particular significance on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the National Day.

Born from Urgent Demand

In the 1990s, faced with rapidly increasing electricity demand, the Government decided to build Phu My Power Center in Ba Ria – Vung Tau (now part of Ho Chi Minh City), the key economic region in the South. This was a strategic decision aligned with the national industrialization and modernization agenda.

During 1997 – 2003, a series of power plant projects at Phu My Power Center were implemented and put into operation, including: Phu My 2.1, Phu My 2.1 Expansion, Phu My 1, Phu My 2.2 BOT, Phu My 3 BOT, and Phu My 4. This complex formed a modern combined-cycle gas thermal power cluster, utilizing gas from the Southern continental shelf, marking a significant technological leap and demonstrating the integration vision of Vietnam’s electricity sector.

Currently, Phu My Thermal Power Company (under Vietnam Electricity Power Generation Corporation 3 – EVNGENCO3) manages and operates four plants with a total capacity of 2,540 MW.

Phu My Power Center Today: Scale of 4,000 MW

Remarkable Development

In the early 2000s, Phu My Power Center emerged as one of the largest electricity production facilities in the country, with a capacity exceeding 4,000 MW, supplying approximately 40% of Southern Vietnam's electricity and nearly 30% of the national electricity output.

The plants employ advanced technologies from leading global corporations such as Mitsubishi (Japan), General Electric (USA), ABB (France), Alstom (Switzerland), and Siemens (Germany). Safe, stable, and efficient operations have demonstrated the capability, intelligence, and responsibility of Vietnamese engineers and workers. The center has also attracted major investors like EDF, BP, and Sembcorp, further integrating Vietnam’s electricity sector with the region and the world.

Beyond serving as a key electricity source, Phu My Power Center is a model for efficient gas resource utilization in power generation, reducing dependence on coal-fired and hydroelectric power, while driving the development of gas, electricity, and fertilizer infrastructure for the economy.

Accompanying the Nation in a New Era
Over more than 28 years of operation, Phu My Power Center has consistently played a pivotal role in the national power system. Under the direction of Vietnam Electricity (EVN), EVNGENCO3, in coordination with the National System Operation Center (NSMO) and related units, Phu My power plants have generated over 300 billion kWh of electricity, with more than 1.3 million safe operating hours, contributing to energy security, especially during periods of rapid industrialization and urbanization.

Not only a main electricity source, the center has also significantly contributed to GDP growth, state revenue, and socio-economic development in Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern key economic region. It has trained multiple generations of skilled engineers and workers, forming a core workforce for power projects nationwide.

Facing the growth of renewable energy, the Center has flexibly transitioned from base-load operation to peak-load support, ensuring grid stability. With high efficiency, fast start-up, and versatile operation capabilities, its gas turbine units meet the dispatch requirements in a competitive electricity market.

During 2021 – 2024, the frequency of plant start-ups and shutdowns increased sharply, reaching up to 914 times in a year. Yet, thanks to high responsibility and scientific management systems, the plants maintained their design capacity, serving as a reliable pillar, particularly in the dry season peak. Many technical initiatives and new technological solutions were applied, enhancing reliability, reducing incidents, improving efficiency, and increasing automation levels.

However, significant challenges remain, as the system currently utilizes only about 30% of plant capacity, while domestic gas supply is declining, meeting only 30% – 40% of full-load operation demand. Therefore, LNG supplementation is an inevitable trend to ensure the sustainable development of Phu My Power Center and maintain national energy security.

The Energy Heart of Southern Vietnam
In 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Phu My Power Center continues to assert its role as the "energy heart of the South". The unit is committed to preserving its traditions, promoting digital transformation, innovation, and applying modern technology.

At the same time, the center closely monitors international research on hydrogen blending with natural gas, as well as carbon capture and reuse possibilities, contributing to the electricity sector’s Net Zero 2050 goal. It also optimizes and harmonizes the available national energy resources.

Nearly 30 years of dedicated service by Phu My Power Center vividly illustrate the 80-year journey of building, protecting, and developing the country. From a key national project, it has become a symbol of intelligence, resilience, and aspiration in Vietnam's electricity sector.

This is not only a source of pride for generations of officials, engineers, and workers dedicated to the Center, but also a powerful motivation for the future, ensuring a continuous flow of electricity while spreading trust, strength, and the aspirations of Vietnam along the path of integration and development, fully prepared to serve the new era of the nation’s rise.
